There are moments when playing the fool is a form of awareness. To accept the role does not necessarily mean accepting the reality that produced it. In some cases participation is the only way to remain close enough to understand what is happening. The difficulty is knowing when participation has become belief.
Perhaps the fool is not the one who fails to see the performance, but the one whose reasons for performing remain unknown. To play along is not always to be deceived. But the longer the role is sustained, the less certain it becomes who is playing whom.
